Cokau went around the city, asking people, “What makes New York so special?” People answered in 3 words.

“Most beautiful women.”
“Great open spaces.”
“Food. Art. Diversity.”

What are your three words?

Blast into the past with “Recalling 1993”, a New Museum exhibit where people can call from a NYC pay phone to hear stories about what happened on that same exact block 20 years ago. As one of 150 featured narrators, Chef superstar Mario Batali recalls the grand opening of his first restaurant. You too can find a pay phone in your neighborhood - simply pick up a pay phone, dial 1-855-FOR-1993, and anxiously wait to see who picks up on the other line.

With so many buildings throughout New York, it’s impossible to identify them all. James Gulliver Hancock took it upon himself to draw a those buildings, all compiled in his book, All The Buildings In New York: That I’ve Drawn So Far. Hancock is an Australian illustrator who found the architecture in New York to be very intriguing when he first moved to the city. As he attempts to draw all the buildings in New York, he records them on his blog, All The Buildings In New York.

Navigating New York City’s subway system is about to get a whole lot easier. Later this year, 90 47-inch touchscreen maps will be installed at various stations throughout the five boroughs. The best route to your destination will appear on the screen by simply touching the subway station on the map.

The “On The Go” kiosks, a partnership between the New York City MTA and Control Group, will also provide a countdown to train arrival, relevant service updates, delays and outages. The kiosks are also outfitted with video cameras, mics and Wi-Fi, enabling two-way communication during emergencies, a feature that would have proven useful during Hurricane Sandy.

The Wi-Fi will also enable cell phone users to access the Internet and stream content. Tourist attractions and points of interest will be featured according to the weather (i.e. The Wollman Ice Skating Rink in Central Park for the winter) or popularity (i.e. Times Square). With kiosks planned for installation at New York’s 400+ subway stations, tourists (and jaded New Yorkers) will soon be able to rejoice.

FILMography is an ongoing photo project by New York City journalist, Christopher Moloney. He finds very specific locations where popular movie scenes were filmed, and holds a printed photo from the movie in front of the real location. He chronicles these experiences on his Tumblr.  We’d assume this takes a serious film buff and some hardcore research to find the actual locations of where these movies were filmed. Moloney also sells a limited number of signed prints through his site.

This is not your typical morning toast and butter, or sausage, eggs, and cheese breakfast sandwich. Trademarked as the most expensive omelet in the world, the “Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata” at Norma’s, an upscale restaurant in the Le Parker Meridien Hotel in Manhattan, costs $1,000. This gourmet dish packs a punch with one whole lobster, eggs, cream, and herbs topped with a hefty 10 oz. pile of American Sturgeon caviar. For those contemplating whether or not to splurge on this delicacy, Norma’s tagline is nothing short of a challenge: “Norma dares you to expense this.”

This past weekend, straphangers purchasing their MetroCards in one of ten stations in Manhattan might have noticed a major change. Replacing the card’s iconic gold front were multicolored letters reading “Be Bright NYC” on a navy blue background accented by a “Gap” logo and finished with the card’s signature black strip.

Yup, that’s right. For the first time since the MTA launched MetroCards more than 15 years ago, front-facing advertisement is taking over the familiar design that greets New Yorkers and many tourists that purchase MetroCards at hundreds of booths and vending machines throughout the city. In an effort to promote the opening of its newly remodeled flagship store at 34th St and Broadway, Gap becomes the first brand to take advantage of this new advertising  space. (Those who get their hands on these MetroCards also get a 20% discount on merchandise purchases through November 18, 2012.)

As advertisers looking for more creative spaces to gain consumers’ attention, could this mean the beginning of the end of the iconic gold MetroCard front? If it means that fares no longer increase, we’re sure many New Yorkers may be in favor.

Heineken Celebrates James Bond Partnership at “Crack The Case” in NYC

Heineken Crack the Case Event (NYC) from Team Epiphany on Vimeo.

On Monday, September 24, 2012 Heineken celebrated their 15-year partnership with James Bond with a train-themed party at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn. In anticipation of the new Bond movie Skyfall, Heineken recently launched a television and digital campaign, “Crack The Case”, which also served as the party’s theme. Three cars on the train platform were transformed into scenes from three classic James Bond movies: Die Another Day, Casino Royale and From Russia With Love. The train platform served as the perfect space for influencers, celebrities and bloggers to rub shoulders and groove to the smooth tunes of DJ Wonder and DJ D-Nice. Heineken was free flowing, per usual, and Bond girls were on hand to bring the themed cars to life. Celebs Anthony Mackie, Adrian Grenier, Denise Vasi, J.R. Smith and Bridget Kelly were in attendance. Visit http://hein.kn/CrackTheCase to view the official Heineken and James Bond commercial.

Over 40 years later, ‘Harlem U.S.A.’ is being exhibited in it’s entirety at the Art Institute of Chicago along with other works by photography trailblazers, including James Van Der Zee, Irving Penn and Roy Carava.

The exhibition will be available for viewing until September 9, 2012.
