Cool Stuff: Panamericana

So many  music producers, bankers, rappers and silicon valley entrepreneurs are RICH, but have no clue what to spend their money on.

New Bentleys. Audacious homes. Ridiculous Watches. Etc.

I don’t have much, but I know how to spend what I have. Add this to my growing bucket list of MUST HAVES before I die: The Panamericana 300SL

M.I.A.’s official video for “Bad Girls” has dropped and, as many seasoned music industry vets as there are here at Team Epiphany, everyone agrees it’s pretty impressive. Tapping into a growing Middle Eastern fad of serious desert drifting, the clip is as high-octane, politically-charged and colorfully swagged-out as expected from the controversial artist. Check it out.

Cool Stuff: Gridiron League

Design and football are two things we love here at Team Epiphany. So, when we discovered Gridiron League - a project to rebrand the NFL’s teams with iconic, heritage-driven logos, we couldn’t help but share some of the results. From the website:

Gridiron League is a collection of idealized NFL insignias that pay tribute to each teams’ history and geography in a period-specific aesthetic that glorifies the Vince Lombardi-era over the Cold-Activated-era. This is not an exercise in nostalgia but an interpretation of the league’s founding principles through the symbols that we, as football fans, identify with most.

Check out a few more of our favorite logos below.

Cool Stuff: WWII Tweets from 1940

Every now and then, amidst the white noise of spam product offerings and onslaught of Kardashian news, something truly exciting comes out of Twitter. WWII Tweets from 1940 is an example of such an account. Updating “live” from the front lines, the handle puts forth fascinating clips of information from the current date’s happenings in 1940 alongside of vintage photos, all in 140 characters or less. Check out some of my recent favorites below and be sure to follow the account yourself. If anything, it provides excellent tidbits of historical information to make any tweeter sound smarter.

  • Belgian King Leopold just phoned monarchs of Holland & Luxembourg, saying “Beware of the flu”: code phrase for imminent German attack.
  • British submarine HMS Starfish has attempted to attack a German ship in North Sea, but due to faulty drill, no torpedoes are actually fired.
  • French wigmakers report massive boom from US- Americans suspected to be hoarding wigs, wary of wartime shortage in hair from central Europe.

Cool Stuff: EBONY x Tumblr

EBONY is on Tumblr - and they’re using it brilliantly. Highlighting everything from comical wig ads to vintage pop culture to deadly serious social commentary, the blog posts old-school pages straight from the historic magazine’s archives. Check it out, and bravo.

Cool Stuff: Candelier

New from NYC-based designer Takeshi Miyakawa comes a piece of functional art entitled “Candelier.” Relatively self-explanatory, this is a chandelier made entirely out of wax. Despite its innovative design, once lit, things could get pretty messy. Check out more photos over at DesignBoom.

Cool Stuff: Warby Parker

I 100% co-sign Warby Parker.

By no means do I have poor vision, but they make it chic to want a pair of glasses. My eyesight “problem” most likely stems from trying on so many glasses belonging to friends who struggle with the “I’m-almost-legally-blind-and-can’t-see-anything-without-contacts/glasses” affliction.

In discussing their eyewear options, however, I always wondered why glasses were so damn expensive! I mean, $200+ for a pair is the cheapest that you can get? And those aren’t even designer frames? You could get a pair of glasses, including prescription lenses, for $35 or less in Korea! That’s a questionable discrepancy.

Finally, some sense is restored to this monopolized industry by a ‘little-engine-that-could’ called Warby Parker - a company that happens to have sourced its esoteric brand from the surnames of characters in Jack Kerouac’s journals. All of their frames (ones that I would actually want to wear!), including prescription, cost only $95! But it doesn’t stop there. For every pair of glasses sold, they give a pair to someone in need by partnering with a non-profit called Vision Spring. Check out how they actually achieve their motto, “Buy a Pair, Give a Pair” here.

I can personally attest for the quality and efficiency of this company. I tried on most of their frames (including some sunglasses) at their Union Square showroom and had the ones I bought delivered in about a week. Go check ‘em out - you won’t be disappointed!

Don’t live in NYC? Worry not. They have a service where you can pick up to 5 frames, have them delivered to your home to try on and then send back with no strings attached. Yes, they are THAT awesome.
